Some paintings seem to take a long time to complete even years, this was one such evolution. Its good to step back  both physically and mentally from a painting for as long as it takes. Photographing the stages in a painting  is a good learning tool. Often we continue on too long because we are just enjoying the process of painting. The time to stop can be after a few deft strokes, sometimes luck, sometimes genius, I guess the art critics and history make that judgement.
Step 1 Washy Acrylic and Black Ink

Whether to paint over a painting and stsart again or to persist and use it as an experimental piece to try someting new... in this case I just kept on. Here are few shots of the journey
 Step 2 Addition of ripped paper mono print found in my stash

Step 3 More washy blue/purple. Transparent washy white painted over the print and graphics, more white lines for contrast and addition of more black graphics.

The final painting at the top has more opaque white lines added

Latest Sale Noosa Sunset Acrylic Painting

 This painting was sold at my U3A display at Noosa, the owners home was named " Noosa Sunset" so it was most appropriate. The time has passed quickly in the few weeks since our return from Turkey. After catching up on two years of travel news  Number 2 son is settled back living in Brisbane ,on the tread mill of working 12 hour days after  fun and frivolity travelling the globe. Im sure it wont be long before he is off trekking  again.
My other excuse for no new paintings is surfing the net planning and booking another trip in the new year to Central Europe. The work is just about complete and I can now think about getting involved with new paintings.

Can you smell my French Yogurt Lemon cake,? It should be ready for afternoon tea. This is the second time Ive made it so hope it is just as good this time.

I managed to get an interesting long walk  in this mornning on the beach with my trusty umbrella in tow, it was well used  I might say.
As the weather is quite warm the beach  was busy on this public holiday and  a little  rain makes it more fun.  Not so fun now as is bucketing down.
Good painting weather  so I got a few hours work in this afternoon
. I often like my paintings very early on and should have someone there to say ... thats good, leave it.
I feel a painting needs a certain amount of time to be worthy of selling. How crazy is that. I must get over it. These are pretty rough photos as  I had to stand above on a chair for the last one as it was wet on the base.

This is the  almost finished one, I think I like the darker mood on the top picture. I always find the foreground the most difficult in a landscape. What do you think?

Today I delivered my 6 paintings for exhibition at the Pomona

,a small country town in the hinterland of Noosa where each year on the 12 and 13 Sept,

 the show is held .The organisers today told me that 75% of exhibitors this year are new.

This does not surprise me as there are very few outlets for local artists to show their work at a reasonable price

.Many gift shops and galleries  have closed down during the past two years leaving many talented artsits with nowhere to show their work.

 Please support your local show or visit if you are in the area, a very beautiful part of the world.

Published Project, Free to Fly by Chris Hobel using Masking Fluid

It is done with  Atelier Interactive Acrylics  using Transparent Colours on Canvas, but looks like watercolour. Today I have just finished another article on masking fluid , it is really fun to use as there are many unexpected results

measures 61x76 cm.I painted this in heavy body Atelier acrylics from a series of photos shown above taken at the flower markets in Sydney a few years ago.

I just love the explosion of colour. Complementary colours are used to full advantage, red/ green, yellow /purple, orange/ blue. I sketched in the rough design with a chalk pencil, painted in the main flowers and completed the painting

Painting Tips

I never use pencil as it smears and is difficult to remove. In this case I would use skintone pastel pencil which blends with the colours of the painting ,it can be rubbed off easily with a clean damp brush. To remove Pencil marks add a little eucalytus oil on a clean cloth and rub gently, it also smells lovely

Todays new acrylic painting (sold)
is a place I long to visit, the Kimberleys in North Western Australia, I used a lot of thick paint applied with the palette knife to create the texture on the rocks, which is my usual signature and layers of transparent glazes to add depth. The secret to creating harmony in a painting is to always think about complementary colours, orange and blue in this case. Ive been told by those who have visited this place that it really looks like it.

I painted the background using large house painting brushes in Atelier Acrylics about a year ago so I thought it a good time to finish it and I needed to clean up my studio for winter.

What winter? Ive just come back from a gorgeous swim in 24degree c water at Sunrise Beach, it has been a long time coming after the cyclonic weather and lows off the coast for way too long.

I'm really happy with the perspective in the painting with loneliness of the single dead tree toward the foreground with the silhouette like figure of a person and their loyal canine, heading home to the distant pub named Einsleigh in outback Queensland Australia...hope you like it. I love the warm yellow Atelier makes called Red Gold it is vivid and transparent. This painting makes you think about a nice warm place with winter winds picking up

Wow, this shouldnt be so scary but it isnt as bad a learning to drive.. at least I cant hurt anyone other than my own self esteem but that hurts heeps doesnt it?

this is one of my favourite spots close to where I live, I sold it some time back to a tourist from a gallery.. the gallery has re sold 3 times and now finally gone as ciberspace takes over giving us artists a world wide gallery
