Some paintings seem to take a long time to complete even years, this was one such evolution. Its good to step back  both physically and mentally from a painting for as long as it takes. Photographing the stages in a painting  is a good learning tool. Often we continue on too long because we are just enjoying the process of painting. The time to stop can be after a few deft strokes, sometimes luck, sometimes genius, I guess the art critics and history make that judgement.
Step 1 Washy Acrylic and Black Ink
Whether to paint over a painting and stsart again or to persist and use it as an experimental piece to try someting new... in this case I just kept on. Here are few shots of the journey
Step 2 Addition of ripped paper mono print found in my stash

Step 3 More washy blue/purple. Transparent washy white painted over the print and graphics, more white lines for contrast and addition of more black graphics.
The final painting at the top has more opaque white lines added

I used  a water colour resist medium, masking fluid  with a fine bush to  create the "white areas" followed by washy  transparent  acrylic layers with a large brush. After I removed the final resist layer  I  added thick and thin hard edge  ink lines with a fine brush. This is a fun technique to try.

Latest Sale Noosa Sunset Acrylic Painting
This painting was sold at my U3A display at Noosa, the owners home was named " Noosa Sunset" so it was most appropriate. The time has passed quickly in the few weeks since our return from Turkey. After catching up on two years of travel news  Number 2 son is settled back living in Brisbane ,on the tread mill of working 12 hour days after  fun and frivolity travelling the globe. Im sure it wont be long before he is off trekking  again.
My other excuse for no new paintings is surfing the net planning and booking another trip in the new year to Central Europe. The work is just about complete and I can now think about getting involved with new paintings.

Can you smell my French Yogurt Lemon cake,? It should be ready for afternoon tea. This is the second time Ive made it so hope it is just as good this time.
Its time to try out the cake....yum

Turkey Return

Ive just returned from Turkey after 6 weeks of exploring an amazing country with such colour and diversity, hence a long break between blogs as I am not as computer savy as some. Having taken my sketch book with me I hoped to find the time to get some sketching in but I think I only managed to find two  sketches in my book. I did take lots of photos so hopefully they will provide some inspiration. You need to take fellow artists with you if you really wamt to slow down and take the time out to do these important things, that way you can really see what there is out there. I did not see much painting at all in Turkey, in fact I cant remember any except in the lobby at Forapart Hotel in Datca. I guess the carpets and handicrafts as well as the wonderful ceramics and mosaics provided a great alternative. I was was pleased to have some sales at the Harbourside Gallery Tewantin when I returned and also at the U3A at Tewantin. Time to get busy painting again. So happy to have my youngest son home after a 2 year world tour of exploration.

Poppy Oil Palette Knife Painting demo better later than not at all Poppies in a sunny field

This the painting I did for the demo .. a few months ago. I seem to have lost the mojo to blog , maybe its because Ive been planning travels to Turkey. Hope to do some sketching for future paintings while amonst all those gorgeous carpets and ceramics and colourful people. Painting in front of strangers was a little daunting, In class its different, I feel Im amongst friends who are supportive of whatever I do.

Another French Street Oil Painting by Noosa Artist Chris Hobel

Another French Street Oil Painting by Noosa Artist Chris Hobel 8x10"

I love this quote as it sums up how I feel about painting. The feeling that the learning process just doesnt end. At least one  painting hero felt the same way
“Painting is very easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do”
Edgar Degas
My latest small  oil painting is called "Another French street" for want of another name, would appreciate someting more quirky form any witty readers.
It is 8x10" in oils.Lots to challenge, the perspective, scattered light, simplifying all those bits.I would like to be able to keep the fresh colour of the first step in the painting, It seems to have been lost in the final more finsihed painting at the top. Overuse of white seems to do this, ie deaden  the colour. Its is good to leave the warm transparent shadows untainted. Something I will try to do next time!
If you would like to buy please email me. Prints available at Fine Art America

Tropical Paradise Palette Knife Painting By Daily Painter Noosa Artist Chris Hobel

New Years Resolution to blog more frequently starts right now. Im still into colour  texture and palette knife painting. I finished this one before Christmas , love the colours, a reflection if my  subtropical garden. Its for sale  as well as priints on Fine Art America. I painted it from the computer monitor, colours are much better
I blocked in the background colours with a brush to eliminate white spots showing through, prior to using the palette knife. The composition had to be modified as it looked too cluttered once the thick paint was added.
The fronds seem to be dancing or chatting in the breeze
